Alpharetta

If shopping is your favorite pastime, there are few better places in the world to indulge yourself than in Alpharetta, Ga. The city is also home to some big-name businesses and welcomes new residents with open arms. This vibrant community has a lot of history and an energetic approach to the future. A new neighbor to the north, Milton, was carved out of unincorporated parts of Fulton County and became a city through legislative action in December 2006.

Milton comprises the far northern portion of northern Fulton County. It has made a big splash on the scene and is one of the most sought-after Atlanta area suburbs. Incorporated in 2006, Milton has a new city hall, a stately traditional structure adjacent to the town green. Home to nearly 40,000 people, Milton bears the name of Revolutionary War hero John Milton.

Duluth

Duluth describes itself as a vibrant community where something is always happening. Situated in Gwinnett County on the northeastern fringes of the Atlanta metropolitan area, Duluth has a population of over 29,000. In the last century, when Duluth was more rural in character, it was one of only a few small towns with its own hospital. Today, the Gwinnett Medical Center, opened in 2006, boasts a modern hospital, with a medical campus that includes a rehabilitation facility, a diabetes and nutrition education center and a sleep disorder center.

Johns Creek is a large, growing suburb of Atlanta, located on the banks of the Chattahoochee River. About 30 miles northeast of the city, Johns Creek has a population around 85,000. Johns Creek is known as an important business center of the northern suburbs. It is a family-oriented community as well as home to more than 2,500 local businesses, including about 600 restaurants.

Roswell, GA, is a city of just over 94,000 people and is known as a great place to raise a family. With a sense of history and a thoroughly modern spirit, it is cosmopolitan, but "just a little bit country" in its approach to life. Situated about 20 miles north of Atlanta, it is the eighth largest city in the state, and is considered a part of the Atlanta metropolitan area.

Sandy Springs is a city in its own right, with a population exceeding 100,000, but it is dwarfed by Atlanta to the south and is considered a suburb of the larger city. As cities go, it is relatively young, and it feels somewhat shiny and new, with abundant development underway. Its cost of living index is 137 on a national scale of 100, and the rest of Georgia scores 93. Median home price is almost three times the state average, but average rent charged is just over the state norm.

Brookhaven

Brookhaven, a northeastern suburban neighborhood of Atlanta, was one of the first planned golf course developments in the United States. It is on the list of National Historic Places and is a popular residential area with a mix of housing that includes smallish bungalows as well as larger single family homes, interesting townhomes, condominiums and modern lofts. Peachtree-Dunwoody Road separates Brookhaven from North Buckhead to the east and together they represent some of the most affluent areas of the entire city.
